Sometimes artists need an intimate space to plumb their depths and once their concepts are shaped to their satisfaction, the space to express themselves. Our studios are modest, practical and central, yet allow for the privacy to engage in the processes that make each resident unique in their expression. Though predominantly a shy breed, more information on our studio inhabitants can be found here.

To be able to create art that moves people in such a beautiful way is a phenomenal gift. Jo has found it to be amazingly satisfying to be creative. Jo is drawn to the watercolour and alcohol ink mediums as they are difficult to control, and it challenges her perfectionist nature. From time to time, you will also find Jo dabbling in other art mediums such as porcelain painting. Jo can often be found painting live at local Wanaka markets.

Kym Beaton Art

Early on in Beaton’s career there was a pursuit of creativity which took her into a career in graphic design and typography, leading to magazine publishing, advertising, freelancing and printing. These roles have all taught her many skills. To trust her own intuition, follow the curiosity. Beaton says “People are fascinating… just watch, join the dots between truths and strong design elements are essential to success.”

Beaton is an avid reader and lifelong learner, always searching for ways to effectively explain ideas and feelings. Painting is a constant dialogue of cause and effect, application and obliteration, intuition and consideration, strength and vulnerability – a visual and emotional balancing act.

It's taken a long time for Beaton to understand that not everyone has the experiences and insights that she has. Her perspectives are unique and she feels compelled to share what she has learnt along the way. Beaton would love to show her love of art with you.

Lizzie Thomas | Ellaquaint Art

Lizzie Thomas works under the name ellaquaint, an artist who is inspired by our natural environment and the taonga (treasures) that dwell within it. She aims to capture something of the wairua (essence) of the manu (birds) and creatures that feature in her work; their personalities often evolve throughout the process of painting. A recentish addition to Wanaka, Thomas was drawn to move here by the sublime landscape, epic mountains, and all the good things you can do on them.

Previously worked as an art teacher with over 15 years experience teaching at Secondary Schools, after school kids’ classes, adult night classes and workshops. Her background is in Sculpture however painting; watercolour, ink and acrylic are currently her media of choice. With having a broad skill base she loves to share in a fun and nurturing environment.
